Burn complete and it had used 10,000 units of Xenon. I bunged it on 4x and went and watched the tele for a bit. The burn out to Jool was 3 hours long (Engines only running at 1/4 thrust, my alignment to the sun was bad!). I have such a ship on route to make a landing on Pol. Which the Ions take an age to push anywhere. Take a nice high ISP nuke engine an your "light" ship weighs min 5 tons. They suck at landing however, Ion engines however many you have just don't have the thrust to counter any kind of gravity, so you have to take a liquid fuel engine along and your launch weight is doubled at a stroke. Lightest pod available, slap on some parachutes a heap of Xenon, 8 ion engines and XL solar panels and you have a very lightweight, not TOO slow ship capable of a one way trip to Laythe. They are quite useful for simply ferrying Kerbs to bodies with a decent atmosphere. although your still looking at minimum 20 minute burns to get anwhere. If you keep the weight right down and crank up the number of engines you can get half decent speeds. they suckįirst there is the obvious slowness, if it wasn't for Alt+. I have been playing with manned Ion craft and I must say overall.
